DuraFex Coating

Dura-Flex™

for Decks & Unpainted Wood

Dura-Flex Coating™ is the ideal coating for your outdoor wood. It is a clear finish that gives wood a beautiful, furniture grade appearance. It's different than Liquid Vinyl Siding. Dura-Flex™ is composed of plastic polymers, not PVC vinyl, and is engineered to be used over natural or unpainted wood. Other deck sealers utilize waxes and oils that are designed to penetrate into the deck boards. The sun ultimately draws them out of the wood and the sealer will constantly need to be re-applied every year or two. Dura-Flex Coating™ works differently. A tough and durable film of plastic polymer is bonded to the outer surface of the boards; where protection is needed most. It will form a clear plastic film that is protective and long-lasting. DuraFlex coating Some of the highest priced wood sealers contain filler and less than 22% of actual polymer. Dura-Flex Coating™ contains 42% polymer which is just one reason why it is tougher and lasts longer than other type coatings. It can be used over decks, fences, outdoor furniture, wood playgrounds and all other unpainted outdoor wood.

Protect your family from nasty splinters and dangers of direct contact with treated lumber! Old pressure treated lumber contains cancer causing chromated copper arsenate (CCA). For the past 60 years, CCA was the pesticide used to treat wood. In 2003 the U.S. government banned the use and sale of CCA lumber for residential use due to the health risk it caused. If you have a deck that was built prior to 2003, your deck wood most likely contains the harmful chemical. Dangerous exposure to CCA occurs when water leaches it out of the wood and it comes in contact with bare skin. Young children are at risk when walking barefoot on treated boards or when on wood playground equipment. The EPA has been advising homeowners to seal their CCA treated lumber with a high molecular weight polymer coating to prevent exposure to the harmful chemicals. Dura-Flex™ is the type coating being recommended; a high molecular weight polymer that will adhere to the outer surface, acting as a barrier against exposure through skin contact. Coating with Dura-Flex Coating™ can protect your family from the harmful effects of CCA as well protecting your family from those nasty splinters.

Decks & Porches are notoriously difficult to keep looking nice! Water and sun are destroyers of deck sealers. It is impossible to seal the wood completely after the deck is built. Moisture will get into the wood, mostly at the end cuts and unprotected underside of the board. As the moisture migrates up towards the surface as it evaporates out on hot sunny days or freezes and expands during a cold winter day, it will push right up through a non-flexible, non-breathing sealer causing it to crack open and then peel off. The flexibility of Dura-Flex™ enables it to expand and contract with temperature changes, protecting your deck and allowing any trapped moisture to escape. Decks with long exposure to direct sunlight can have their coatings literally burned off within six months to a year or less! The glossy Dura-Flex™ finish reflects the harmful UV sun rays while giving the wood a beautiful furniture grade look. For wood that is exposed to intense sunlight for most of the day, applying multiple coats provides added protection and maximum longevity.

Pressure treated wood is notorious for not holding sealers and other coatings. The pressure treatment which is intended to protect the wood from insect damage also resists most common sealers and you end up re-coating every year. Sealers work by soaking into the wood and will only last until it is drawn out by the sun. Since Dura-Flex™ stays on the surface and bonds to the outer layer of the boards, the chemicals used in pressure treating does not interfere with adhesion. However, wood must be sufficiently aged to allow the pressure treating chemicals to completely dry and work away from the surface before being coated over.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

New types of insecticides such as copper azole and alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) are being used by wood suppliers to pressure treat lumber. ACQ has shown to be corrosive to aluminum and other metals. Enough time has not passed to know the effects these new pesticide chemicals will have on Dura-Flex Coating™.
Field testing is ongoing.
